What to Do if you Have a DUI

Duii law firm

If you have gotten a DUI there are a few ways that things could go. No matter what the outcome, you are going to want an attorney. Specifically a DUII attorney. You need to make sure that you get an attorney from a law firm that has dealt with your situation before. Better yet, find a law firm that has won cases like yours. The more that they’ve won the better but you do need to be prepared that you may not win the case and the lawyer will only be able to help you lower the charges. DUII attorneys are not miracle workers, this, you need to keep in mind. Getting a DUI is a huge mistake and the best law firms in the country may not be able to get you out of it entirely. Nor should they. Here are some things for you to consider.

You may still be convicted.
This is the main thing that you need to be aware of. Having a lawyer is imperative after getting a DUI. However, you do not only get a lawyer to get your charges dismissed. Often times, your charges will not be entirely dismissed at all but at least a lawyer will be able to help lower the charges. While not all DUI’s are felony charges, many of them are. A lawyer can potentially lower the charge to a misdemeanor along with some promises from you. Fines and consequences will still ensue.

A lawyer could save you money.
This might sound strange. Typically when you think of a lawyer, you assume that you will need to pay a lot of money. However, in comparison to how much a ticket could cost you, a lawyer may be cheaper. A first time offender will pay anywhere from $300 to $2,000 whereas repeat offenders may have to pay upwards of $10,000. A DUI attorney will take your case for around $2,000 or less usually. On top of that, if you end up being able to pay a reduced fine, the lawyer may lower your fee to the law firm. However, the more serious the DUI is or the more repeated, the higher the cost of lawyer and ticket.

Money is the least of your worries.
If you are a repeat offender or someone has been injured or killed due to your drunk driving, then you are extremely lucky if you only end up paying a high fine. In most cases, the offender will end up with jail time. If you do not have a lawyer, you will probably get more jail time than you would if you had legal representation. However severe the DUI, having a lawyer would best serve you, especially if you are willing to make the necessary lifestyle changes.

Your insurance will go up.
This is something that lawyers have no control over. After you get even one DUI, your rates are going to sky rocket. Some insurance companies will refuse to cover you at all. Because proof of insurance is a requirement by law, you could run into a lot of trouble if you have a hard time being insured. You lawyer may be able to negotiate a plea to lower your charges in order to encourage insurance companies to cover you even though it may be expensive. You also may be able to get a breathalyzer interlock system installed in your car that is linked to your insurance company so that after a certain amount of time without drinking and driving, your premiums could be lowered. If you are willing to do this, courts also look favorably upon that desired life change.

It may be a difficult time in your life while dealing with a DUI so if you can avoid it, do so. But, if you have already gotten this then you need to find the best lawyer that will take on your case. Keep in mind all of these points and be realistic about your outcome and grateful for anything that your lawyer can do for you. Simply having someone on your side during this time will be a great help to you. Try not to take it for granted because this may be your one shot to make it right.
